What is Permanent Residency?

Generally, when you say to immigrate to Canada, it means to obtain a permanent resident status in Canada.

Then, what is permanent residency?

Permanent resident status allows you the following things :

  • Staying in Canada
  • Studying in Canada
  • Working in Canada

As a permanent resident, you can live in Canada almost the same as Canadian citizens do.

Permanent Residency vs Citizenship

You might wonder that if you obtain Canadian permanent residency, you will use your current citizenship.

You don’t have to worry about this. Obtaining Canadian permanent residency doesn’t affect your current citizenship.

If you apply for Canadian citizenship, you might lose your current citizenship depending on the country’s policy. Some countries such as China and Japan don’t allow dual citizenship.

Economic Class

Express Entry

Express Entry is the most simple and fair program in Canadian Immigration system. If you meet the requirements and have a high score in a profile scale, you can obtain Canadian permanent resident status.

Express Entry has 3 subcategories :

  1. Canadian Experience Class
  2. Federal Skilled Worker
  3. Federal Skilled Trade

Provincial Nominee Programs

Many Provinces in Canada has their own immigration programs. Provincial governments give applicants a nomination, and with this nomination, Federal government grants the applicant permanent resident status.

Family Class

If your spouse is Canadian or Canadian permanent resident, you can immigrate to Canada through Family Class under Spouse Sponsorship Category.

Through this application, the marriage or relationship is assessed if it is genuine. Canada allows various forms of marriage such as Common law relationship and same-sex marriage, so you might be able to choose a form of marriage that is not available in your country.

If you become a Canadian permanent resident, you can sponsor your children (under 22 years old) or your parents.
