What it means to be a sponsor

As a sponsor, you must sign an undertaking and a sponsorship agreement.

  • The undertaking is a formal commitment to financially support the sponsored individuals for a designated period—20 years in most of Canada and 10 years in Quebec—from the day they become permanent residents.
  • The sponsorship agreement outlines mutual responsibilities during the undertaking period. You, as the sponsor, are responsible for providing for their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and certain health needs not covered by public services. The sponsored individuals must also attempt to support themselves and their family members.
